About Us
We love bikes :)
Road bikes, mountain bikes, gravel bikes, beach cruisers—if it rolls, we’re into it. We love bikes because they make us feel alive. They put smiles on our faces. They connect us with our friends, our family, and ourselves. They also help us heal.
We believe healing goes beyond medicine. Sometimes, the best medicine after cancer treatment is simply getting outside and pedaling a bike. That’s why Bikes Heal provides bicycles to cancer survivors to support their journey back to strength—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Whether that journey begins on a quiet neighborhood street, a winding mountain trail, or a stationary trainer in the garage, every ride is a step toward healing.
Our Mission
We help cancer survivors reconnect with life through the healing power of cycling. We believe that movement can be medicine—and that riding a bike can restore more than just physical strength. It can rebuild confidence, ease anxiety, and open the door to a more joyful and active life after cancer.
Our Story
Bikes Heal was founded by Brian Novak, a cyclist, outdoor enthusiast, and 6x cancer survivor(colon, testicular, left lung, thyroid, kidney, right lung) due to a rare genetic mutation called Li-Fraumeni Syndrome (LFS). During his recovery from his first lung cancer, Brian experienced firsthand the transformative impact of getting back on a bike. Three days after surgery to remove the upper part of his left lung, he stepped on his bike trainer and began to pedal. It wasn’t about training—it was about learning how to breathe again. It was slow and painful but it helped clear the fluid from his lung and gave him hope that he was on a mission to heal and get back up the mountain.
Inspired to help others experience that same renewal, he created Bikes Heal—to help other survivors rediscover their strength and rebuild their lives, one ride at a time.
What We Do
We support cancer survivors by:
- Encouraging cycling and outdoor experiences as a path to recovery
- Providing access to bicycles and gear when needed
- Offering guidance, encouragement, and a community of others who understand the journey
Our goal isn’t just to put people on bikes—it’s to help survivors feel strong, independent, and whole again.
We envision a future where every cancer survivor has access to tools that support long-term healing—and where cycling becomes a symbol of resilience, renewal, and hope. At BikesHeal.org, we ride not just for fitness, but for life.
